Which vineyard? Seven wineries in Hawke’s Bay you should visit

The best wineries in Hawke's Bay New Zealand aren’t just about the wine, they’re about the wine experience. The region enjoys an international reputation for wine-making and is home to over 100 vineyards and 80 wineries. Here’s seven of our favourites and why you should visit them:

1. Craggy Range. Named best winery in the world in 2014, and it's not hard to see why. Flanked by the impressive Te Mata hills, Craggy Range is a modern and slick building surrounded by rustic fields reminiscent of the French countryside. It has a cellar door and award winning restaurant ‘Terrôir’ on-site. Try: the Te Kahu or Gimblett Gravels Syrah.
2. Black Barn.  A small, boutique vineyard, Black Barn only produces 4,000 cases of wine per year – many of which are sold exclusively through its cellar door. A must-do while you are in the Hawke's Bay region, Black Barn also offers intimate Bistro-style dining under a canopy of vines. Try: The Sauvignon Blanc or the 2014 reserve Chardonnay. 
3. Te Mata Estate. Established in 1896, Te Mata is known for producing some of some of New Zealand’s best reds. Its property is historic, and the buildings are original – converted from the stables in the late 1800’s. Visit the cellar door to learn more about the winery’s history. Try:  The Coleraine or the 2014 Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc.
4. Mission Estate. The oldest Winery in New Zealand still in operation, Mission Estate uses a combination of traditional wine-making techniques as well as modern technology. Housed in a restored historic seminary building, Mission Estate is the most visited winery in the country. Try: the 2013 Mission Reserve Chardonnay or the Mission Reserve Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012.

1. Trinity Hill. Considered an iconic New Zealand Winery, Trinity Hill consistently produces award-winning traditional and innovative wine varieties. Set on a hectare of landscaped lawns and gardens, its has a well stocked cellar door and is known for its Homage Syrah. Try: the 2014 Homage Syrah or the 2014 Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris
2. Alpha Domus. An exclusive family owned vineyard established just 25 years ago, Alpha Domus is a small single vineyard estate, with each variety produced estate grown and vinted on-site. A rustic barn serves as the cellar door, giving a romantic touch to wine tasting. Try: the 2015 Heroines Rose or the Barnstormer Syrah.
3. Elephant Hill. Close to the idyllic Te Awanga Coastline, Elephant Hill is known for its attention to detail and innovation. The winery overlooks the ocean is designed by Architect John Blair, is streamlined and contemporary and features an award winning restaurant as well. Try: the 2013 Airavata or the 2011 Rania.
